Faculty Feature: Professor Guldeniz Martinek, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design

July 19, 2018 – Professor Guldeniz Martinek has been part of the Newbury Community since the 2014-2015 academic year, when she served as an adjunct professor for the year. In 2017, Professor Martinek returned to Newbury as a full-time faculty member. Newbury is glad to have Martinek back on campus with our graphic design program.

Originally from Bursa, Turkey, Professor Martinek moved to the United States to further her education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design and arts education from Uludag University College of Education in Fine Arts in Bursa and has both a Master of Arts and Master in Fine Arts from The University of Iowa.

Throughout her career, Professor Martinek continued working and teaching throughout the United States and Turkey. In the field, Professor Martinek worked as a graphic designer at The University of Iowa Museum of Art, Arte Istanbul Art Center, Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences at MIT, Lavu Inc. (Albuquerque), and more. She also served as full-time Art Director at Beymarka at Beymekan in Bursa.

Before beginning at Newbury, Professor Martinek taught at The University of Iowa, Isik University and Fatih Sultan Mehmet University, both in Istanbul. However, Professor Martinek enjoys working at Newbury. She said, “I like the motto of Newbury and the diversity of our school. I love the family feeling of our campus and the classes because it creates a ‘design firm feeling’ for the students.”

According to the graphic design program mission statement, students experience “a project-based curriculum [where they] gain hands-on experience in the latest software, creating websites, interactive experiences and print materials.” Students take classes in typography, media design, digital communications, photo imaging, web design, as well as capstone classes and internships.

While Professor Martinek likes teaching typography and capstone classes, she said, “I like all my courses, seriously! I can’t really separate any of them from each other.” She also explained that the “classes give me a chance to prepare my students to learn how to work together as a team as well as future designers.”
