Spears Nominated for 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award

July 16, 2018 – Class of 2018 graduate Destiny Spears is still adding to her impressive resumé despite graduating in May, as she has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The Woman of the Year Award, now in its 28th year, honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in not only the field of athletics but also the classroom and campus community.

Spears was a three-sport student-athlete at Newbury, most notably rewriting the record books of the women's basketball program in her four seasons from 2014-2018. Spears also ran cross country and track & field for the Nighthawks and served as captain for all three programs during her time at Newbury.

"It is a huge honor to represent Newbury College and the NECC as a nominee to be the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year," said Spears. "I'll always appreciate the support I received over the years that have been influential in obtaining this nomination. I truly do strive to make my family, hometown, and loved ones proud. Thank you Newbury College and the NECC for this nomination. This means so much to me."

For the women's basketball program, Spears is the all-time leading scorer with 1,437 career points. She also holds the all-time records in steals, free throws made, minutes played, games played, and starts.

Additionally, Spears holds numerous season-long records and is one of only two players in program history to score 1,000 career points and collect 1,000 career rebounds.

Spears was named the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year this past season and is a two-time All-NECC First Team forward in women's basketball.

"I'd also like to give a shoutout to [Coach] Marc Taney," said Spears. "He was one of those influential people and I wouldn't have this chance without his coaching."

A record 581 female student-athletes have been nominated for the Woman of the Year Award in 2018 with the cumulative GPA of these student-athletes at 3.69.

The 581 student-athletes will be whittled down to 30 nominees, 10 from each division, as selected by the Woman of the Year selection committee.

From the top 30, the selection committee will determine the top three honorees from each division and announces the nine finalists in September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will then choose the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year from those nine.

The top 30 honorees, including the 2018 Woman of the Year, will be announced at the awards dinner on Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.

Fellow NECC student-athlete Lauren Vallee also received a nomination for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award from the Conference.
