Newbury College Hires Britta Ashman to Head Volleyball Coach Position

July 9, 2018 – Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper announced today the hiring of Britta Ashman as Head Men's and Women's Volleyball Coach, effective immediately.

Ashman joins Newbury College with over a decade of coaching experience, most recently as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Division I Northeastern University. As an assistant, Coach Ashman and the Huskies finished 17-13 (10-6 Colonial Athletic Association), which included a 10-match winning streak.

At the Division III level, Ashman has served as head coach at Curry College and Anna Maria College. Her last stint as a head coach in 2016 with Anna Maria resulted in a 21-12 (8-3 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) record. The 21-wins are the most in AMCATS program history and resulted in the first postseason win in Anna Maria's women's volleyball program.

"I want to thank President Chillo and Athletic Director Jonathan Harper for this opportunity," said Ashman. "I am very excited to join my fellow coaching staff and colleagues at Newbury College where coaches are truly invested in the achievement of the student-athletes, building strong athletes and community members."

Along with her head coaching responsibilities at Anna Maria, Ashman also served as Senior Woman Administrator, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor, and Title IX coordinator. In addition, Ashman oversaw all aspects of recruiting, team practices, and film review sessions.

"My goal for the volleyball program is to create one that grows and becomes deeper each year," said Ashman. "Through hard work of our current athletes and recruiting of future athletes, I want a program that continuously builds each year with the level of play as well as create a challenging schedule that will be reflective of our current level of play and where we want to go in the future."

In two seasons as a student-athlete at George Washington University, Ashman was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team as an outside hitter, at the time making her only the second first-year player in program history to be named to the All-Rookie Team in the A-10.

After two seasons at George Washington, Ashman transferred to Northeastern where she played her final season of volleyball as a junior, forgoing her senior season to serve as the team's Student Assistant Coach.

"This is an important time in the development of the Newbury Men's and Women's Volleyball programs and I am excited to welcome Britta on board as the next head coach," said Harper. "She brings a diverse background both as a coach and an administrator that will enhance the operation of the department.  More importantly, Britta will lead the recruiting efforts for men's and women's volleyball as we look forward to the reemergence of both programs."

Ashman has a Bachelor's of Arts in English from Northeastern and holds two Masters Degrees, one in Education from Salem State University, the other in Sports Management and Administration from Southern New Hampshire University.
