Newbury Supports Language Education in Response to American Academy of Arts & Sciences Call-to-Action

May 30, 2018 – Newbury is proud to be a part of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences' initiative to support a national effort to enhance language education in America. The Academy released a call-to-action which has been endorsed by 37 individuals and over 150 organizations.

Greater language education in America is crucial for cultural understanding and international cooperation. According to the call-to-action, the Academy is advocating for the following results:

  • Provide access to languages for all age groups
  • Prepare more language teachers
  • Promote public-private partnerships in language education
  • Support heritage and indigenous language communities
  • Encourage international learning experiences

Through Newbury’s education, students are encouraged to become global-minded and engaged citizens. Newbury’s dynamic academic programs and experiential learning opportunities, both locally and abroad, help to meet the goals outlined in the Academy’s call-to-action.

Newbury is proud to stand with the other, colleges, universities, businesses and organizations committed to language education. President Joseph L. Chillo said, "Language education plays a critical role in the development of a strong liberal arts foundation. The understanding of language and the role it plays in a global education is essential for today's students and for tomorrow's workforce. As a large number of Newbury students and alumni speak more than one language, language opens the door for greater cultural understanding."

The Academy of Arts & Sciences published a press release on May 30, 2018.
