May 11, 2018 – On Sunday, May 6, 2018, John T. (Jack) Connelly, President and CEO of Longwood Security, delivered the 2018 Commencement Address at John Hancock Hall in Boston. Before speaking to the graduates, Connelly was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Newbury President, Dr. Joseph L. Chillo, and Board of Trustees Chair, Margaret M. Winslow.
Connelly spoke on the lessons he has learned throughout his life and career that he did not learn in college—he shared stories and advice from his family, friends and colleagues on finding personal and professional success.
Connelly’s advice included: asking questions even when it is scary, keeping an open mind in the face of hardship or failure, taking the first step, talking and listening to other people in order to find a common ground or kinship and exploring volunteer opportunities.
He also encouraged students to “look for something that needs to be done and go do it—don’t wait to be told, don’t wait to be asked, just go do it.”
Connelly congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment and wished them luck as they find their place in the world. He said, “So far you have a diploma. You have proved that you have the ability to learn, that you can find the right answers.”
He concluded his address with a final piece of advice: “If you’re going to be successful, you need to go out there and do something you enjoy, something that makes you feel good, something you can have fun with.”
Connelly has served as President and CEO of Longwood Security since 1986 and has almost fifty years of experience in criminal justice, law, politics and security. On September 5, 2017, Jack Connelly and his family were honored at the ribbon cutting for the new Connelly Family Sport Court on campus. He and his family have been longtime supporters of Newbury and its mission.
