Ansa Nisar ’18 Delivers Student Commencement Speech

May 11, 2018 – At Newbury’s 55th Annual Commencement Exercises, graduate Ansa Nisar addressed her peers as the Student Commencement Speaker. Nisar has excelled in the classroom and in the campus community. She is graduating summa cum laude with a double major in Healthcare Management and Accounting and received the Outstanding Student Achievement Program Award for Healthcare Management.

Nisar is an active member of Newbury, serving in many leadership roles including as an Admissions Ambassador, Resident Assistant and President of the Multicultural Student Organization. She is a member of both the Alpha Chi and Sigma Beta Delta national honor societies and, this year, received the Spirit of Newbury award at the 2018 Student Leadership Award Ceremony.

Nisar’s commencement speech discussed community, determination and inclusion, speaking on her experience of finding a home at Newbury, almost 7,000 miles away from her home country of Pakistan.

“In some places in the world or even in this country someone who may love like us, who may look like us, who may identify as us, who may worship like us, or who may think like us may not always be accepted,” said Nisar. “But that was never the case for me at Newbury. I was accepted, and I have been given the opportunity to accomplish things that I could have never imagined.”

Nisar spoke on the Newbury Community, the accomplishments she and her class experienced during their time here and the lasting impact being a Nighthawk will have on each student as they become alumni. She said, “I’m proud to say that we are able to come to a space where we embrace differences, learn about ourselves and have built the strength to take on the obstacles that the world will throw at us after we leave through those doors today.”

Nisar concluded her speech with advice for her peers: “Take every opportunity that comes your way. No matter how big or small. Take it, cherish it and use it to develop your own personal goals and dreams.”

The John Hancock Hall auditorium gave Nisar a standing ovation as she wished her classmates luck in the future. President Joseph Chillo then invited the Class of 2018 to wave through the live stream to Nisar’s family in Pakistan, who were unable to attend the commencement ceremony. He said, “As you all know, Ansa is something special and her parents should be very proud of her today.”

Nisar has accepted a position as Operations Project Management Associate at Athenahealth in Watertown, Ma., where she will utilize both her healthcare management and accounting degrees.
