Apr. 26, 2018 – Congratulations to the following students for being selected to participate in Showa Women’s University 2018 Summer International Program (SSIP) in Tokyo, Japan:
The SSIP program allows Newbury students to travel abroad for three weeks, experiencing and learning about Japanese culture. These students will collaborate with Japanese students, live with Japanese families for short homestays, and explore both the contemporary and traditional aspects of the country.
JaKima Price is especially excited about the immersion into another culture. “I'm very interested in learning about another country’s history and I believe that it is important to be able to experience a completely different culture than my own and be able to expand my overall knowledge,” said Price.
Price also explained how this trip will influence both their education and future career in psychology: “I want to be able to reach out to people of different cultures than my own and be able to understand all of the different aspects of their culture, so that I will be able to help them when working together.”
The SSIP program gives students the chance to experience the architecture, art, history, cuisine, and overall culture and daily life of a country they might have otherwise never had a chance to visit.
Brittney Freeman said, “What interested me in the Showa program was the opportunity to study abroad in a country that I have never been too and knowing that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am excited visit museums and see historical sites such as Mt. Fuji and The Great Buddha of Kamakura.”
This unique opportunity provides students with an educational experience not only outside of the classroom, but outside of the country. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the world, becoming more globally-minded citizens.
