Apr. 26, 2018 – At the 2018 Student Leadership Awards Ceremony, Dylan Foran ’20 was announced as President of Newbury’s Student Government Association for the 2018-2019 year. The ceremony included the inauguration and Oath of Office for all of next year’s SGA officers: Foran as President, Jordan Robertson as Vice President of Academic Initiatives, and Meaghan Irving as Vice President of Student Life.
“It makes me feel great that I was elected SGA President,” said Foran. “What made me interested in SGA was the ability to work closely with my peers to better our experience at Newbury. I believe that it is important for us to have our voices heard in order to create an amazing environment for us and future students.”
This past year, SGA has been involved in a number of initiatives and programs on campus, including advocating for gender inclusive housing, hosting the ‘Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice’ fall event and commuter breakfast, and sponsoring the sport management program’s 5K The Newbury Way and the 3v3 Sport Court Basketball Senior Fundraiser.
Foran said, “[Being president] is an honor and a huge responsibility. I am very happy about this position, but this is just the beginning. I look forward to continuing to build what former SGA presidents have put before me.”
Katelyn Audette ‘18, the 2017-2018 SGA President, said, on passing the gavel to Foran, “This year as Dylan has served as a general senate member, it is my hope that he has been able to see my efforts to be an advocate and a leader for our organization. I have not taken this position lightly with the responsibilities and tasks that I have encountered, understanding the true integrity one must have to be successful. Passing the gavel to the next SGA president has been a bittersweet feeling for myself as I have cherished all I have learned in the past three years.”
She also offered advice to Foran and all future SGA members: “Believe in the voice that [you] have as a student leader. Often times we set limitations in our mind without realizing so, and it can hold ourselves back from achieving great things. Being a person with integrity to do the right thing and take action is very important, as well as keeping a positive attitude. Working together to further enhance the Newbury experience is extremely important and I feel that SGA will continue to ‘wow’ the community in the years to come!”
The student leaders are an influential part of the College, making the Newbury experience a special place for all. Newbury wishes Foran luck as he takes on this new leadership role and looks forward to the contributions SGA will make to the campus community in the coming years.
