Newbury Welcomes New Director of Experiential Education and Career Services

Mar. 21, 2018 – Newbury is pleased to welcome Matthew Qualter, the new Director of Experiential Education and Career Services. Qualter comes to Newbury from North Shore Community College where he served as a Coordinator for Cooperative Education & Internships. He brings over a decade of experience in career counseling and related skills, also earning his Bachelor of Arts from Salem State University and MBA from Southern New Hampshire University.

He said, “Working in career services and higher education is enjoyable as it provides a unique opportunity to interact internally and externally with diverse groups of individuals. The primary focus is to help students gain better access with career services and help them grow both personally and professionally. It is important to ensure our services are meeting academic learning outcomes and to help employers with their human resource needs in hiring Newbury students.”

Newbury’s Experiential Education and Career Services Center helps students on their path to professional success in both internships and post-graduate goals. The Center currently offers the following services:

  • An Annual Career Fair
  • Career Counseling
  • Cover Letter & Resume Writing Assistance
  • Graduate School Information
  • Free Online Personality & Interest Assessment Tests
  • In-Class Workshops & Presentations
  • Internship & Job Leads
  • Interview Readiness
  • On-campus Recruiting

Qualter plans to expand the reach of the Experiential Education and Career Services Center to provide more opportunities for students. He said, “We have many goals in the Experiential Education and Career Services Center: to learn more about the culture, campus and people at Newbury, ...to develop positive and sustainable partnerships with employers locally, nationally and globally so students have access to many opportunities for quality internships and employment upon graduation, [and] to further develop our already successful study abroad programs and partnerships that Newbury offers students.”

Students are encouraged to utilize the Experiential Education and Career Services Center throughout their time at Newbury—not just in the last semester. Qualter said, “We encourage students to visit our Center early so that they are best prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation. This spring, we are offering two workshops for students (resume writing and interviewing skills) and a Business Career Panel.  In addition, our office is always available for career counseling and interest assessment tests, in class workshops and presentations, graduate school and study abroad information, and job leads. Next year, we will offer more on-campus recruiting and our career fair.”
