Jan. 25, 2018 – Jake Pringle ’18 traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 2018 NCAA Convention from January 17-20. The four-day convention incorporates workshops, information booths, sessions and other programs for attendees to form connections, discuss important issues, learn new skills and develop ideas to bring back to campus.
Pringle says, “The highlights of the convention for me were working with Special Olympic athletes and seeing Robin Roberts speak live to us from the set of “Good Morning America.” I work with Special Olympics as much as I can for either my internship or volunteering [and] Robin Roberts gave me some of the best motivational lessons I could have heard.”
Roberts, a five-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and co-anchor of Good Morning America, was awarded with the NCAA President’s Gerald R. Ford Award for her leadership and support for college athletics.
Pringle is a Sport Management major and plays on the Nighthawk baseball team. He says the Convention exposed him to how other athletic programs function: “It showed me possibilities that we could do here at Newbury to better the lives of our student-athletes.”
Pringle hopes to continue his involvement in athletics after graduation. He says the opportunity to attend the NCAA Convention “showed me how meetings are organized and a lot of the behind-the-scenes factors of this career. I have wanted to be a coach or athletic director for as long as I possibly could remember and this Convention showed me what I would be doing in the future.”
