Sass Named Preseason All-American for Second Consecutive Year

Jan. 23, 2018 – Nighthawks junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) will, once again, enter the season as a Preseason All-American, as a member of the Second-Team, as announced by the Fastpitch News on Tuesday. It's Sass' second nomination to the FPN All-American Team, she was a First-Team Preseason All-American last season.

As a sophomore, Sass batted .448 including a career-high 52 hits. Of those 52 hits, Sass had seven doubles, two triples, and nine home runs, amassing 34 RBIs in 40 games. Her .594 on-base percentage was eighth-best in all of Division III. Sass, a constant home run threat in the heart of the Nighthawks lineup, ranked 20th in Division III in walks with 27.

"It is such an honor to be recognized by FPN as a Preseason All American for the second year in a row," said Sass. "I am lucky enough to be on a team full of strong and skilled softball players who are all committed to our ultimate goal. I am confident that this years team is ready to work hard towards winning an NECC championship."

In her first two seasons, Sass has recorded 98 hits, the most by any player through their sophomore year. Her 20 career home runs are a program record with two years of eligibility remaining. Twice she has accounted for six RBIs, also program records. Her 51 RBIs as a freshman is a record. Sass is just 16 RBIs away from becoming the first player in program history to reach 100 RBIs.

"I'm so proud of Noelle for being named a pre-season All American again this year.  She's a real anchor at the center of our lineup who is capable of changing the game with one swing," said Head Coach Casey Butler. "She's always working towards becoming a better athlete and a more versatile hitter. Noelle has learned to adjust to game situations and to see what the team needs from her at the plate. I'm excited to see how Noelle, and the entire Nighthawks team, can build on last year's success."

The Nighthawks are coming off the best season in their program's history after finishing 23-17 and 16-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Their appearance in the NECC Championship was the first since 2013 while their 9-0 start to the NECC season was the best in program history.

Newbury starts their 2018 season in Florida on March 12 as part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers and Naples.
