Jan. 12, 2018 – In 1962, on Newbury St. in Boston’s Back Bay, Newbury College was founded by Ed Tassinari. Then named the Newbury School of Business, the institution had the goal of educating students in the city of Boston to be competent and successful employees. Today, the College celebrates its 56th year.
While Newbury has made significant changes and enhancements to the institution, the mission remains the same—to educate students to be prepared not only for their careers, but for a lifetime of learning and civic engagement. Newbury offers a career-focused, experiential education, grounded in the liberal arts, ensuring students graduate ready to take on the professional and personal challenges of life after college.
Newbury began as a business school with a graduating class of only 11 students in its first year. Today, the College offers over 20 academic programs across four schools, as well as 17 division III athletic teams and a wide variety of clubs and activities.
The College has undergone many changes in its 56-year history in order to provide a relevant and modern education as well as an engaging student experience. Newbury moved to Boylston St in 1968, became Newbury Junior College in 1971, moved to Brookline in 1982, became Newbury College in 1985, and officially became a baccalaureate college in 1994.
More recently, Newbury has made significant enhancements to the Brookline campus and the academic and co-curricular experience for students. The College opened the nationally-recognized Student Success Center, the Chawla Fitness Center and the Connelly Family Sport Court and renovated the dining hall. Newbury entered into an athletic consortium with Hellenic College Holy Cross and continues to partner with international institutions, such as Showa Women’s University in Tokyo and the American University in Bulgaria, to expand its study abroad opportunities.
Newbury has also received awards and recognitions for its dedication to its mission and students. The College received two Davis Educational Foundation Grants, continues to be recognized as a College of Distinction, and, for the first time in its history, was named a Top 40 College in the North Region by U.S. News & World Report.
The passionate and dedicated Newbury Community is excited for the future of the institution and continues to work hard to enhance the Newbury education and experience for students.
