Sept. 8, 2017 – On Tuesday September 5, the Newbury Community gathered at the new outdoor sport court for the ribbon cutting and dedication. The Connelly Family Sport Court is located just outside of the Chawla Fitness Center and features a basketball court, batting cage and pitcher’s mound. This space can be utilized by all of Newbury’s student-athletes for scrimmages and training and it will provide a welcome recreational area for the College Community as a whole.
Jack Connelly and his family have been longtime supporters of Newbury and its mission. At the event, Newbury President, Dr. Joseph L. Chillo, thanked Connelly and said, “You have done much over the years in support of the College and for the services that you provide through Longwood Security. Your lead gift has transformed this space and will bring much joy to our College Community.”
Newbury also thanked the Friends of the College and the donors of the Nighthawk Golf Tournament in helping raise the funds to make this project a reality. The Connelly Family Sport Court is part of Newbury’s Strategic and Campus Master Plans to enhance health and wellness on campus and to further develop the overall student experience.
In addition to the athletic space, Newbury added two benches in the Sport Court area. One is dedicated to Professor and former Faculty Athletic Representative Debbie Mael who has shown consistent support of the academic work of Newbury’s students throughout her career at Newbury. As a long-time faculty member, Mael has been influential in helping thousands of students graduate.
The second bench is given to Newbury by the Class of 2015 to honor the memory of Lamar McClinton who worked at Newbury from 2009 to 2013. McClinton served as a Resident Director & Coordinator of Multicultural Programming and Community Service, planning many alternative spring break trips. His love for Newbury basketball makes this dedication a perfect way to honor his service to the College.
Newbury is proud to unveil the Connelly Family Sport Court and add this meaningful space to campus.
