Dr. Joseph L. Chillo was named the fifth president of Newbury College in June 2014 and has presided over a period of institutional growth marked by fundraising, facility expansion, and new academic and athletic programs. As a result, Newbury built a national-award winning Student Success Center, the Chawla Fitness Center, the Connelly Family Sport Court and renovated its dining hall. New academic programs have repositioned the College in a new strategic direction, which reflects President Chillo’s Strategic and Campus Master Plans.
The Student Success Center and the College’s new English and Math Mastery programs were recognized in 2016 by the American Council on Education/Fidelity Investments for its institutional transformation leadership award. Also in 2016, President Chillo led the institution through a successful re-accreditation visit with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Newbury College was recognized as a College of Distinction in both 2016 and 2017 and was recognized as a Top 40 College in the North Region by the U.S. News & World Report.
The pace of innovation has transformed the institution and has created a dynamic learning and living environment. A major transformation in information technology to information resource management created a more efficient and effective technological environment at the College. Under President Chillo, D2L was introduced as the College’s new learning platform along with Newbury’s first online degree program. A significant and innovative change to the College occurred when President Chillo led new strategic partnerships with the Aramark Corporation and Brookline Bank.
Under President Chillo’s leadership, nine new members were added to the Board of Trustees and the number of donors to the College has increased by 36%. Newbury’s fundraising efforts have been impressive since 2014, with more than $8M raised to date in cash and pledges.
Dr. Chillo has been a frequent presenter at regional and national conferences on trends of higher education, enrollment management, strategic planning, and college cost. In 2015, Newbury introduced its innovative 3-year bachelor’s degree program designed to address college affordability with a guaranteed tuition rate of $15,000 per year. Dr. Chillo is a member of the Presidents’ Advisory Group of the NCAA for Division III, a member of the Board of Directors for AICUM, and serves as Chair of the Presidents’ Group for the College’s athletic conference (NECC).
